Kei car fans across China can now really start to rejoice, first it was the the new Alto that Suzuki put into production in China (albeit with Chang-an Suzuki) but the new WagonR is about to be produced in China as well with Suzuki’s other JV partner, Chang He.

It was rumoured that the Changhe car producing venture was soon to be canned in favour of other more profitable ventures, but it seems that may have been a ruse to get Suzuki to further invest in the JV that currently only produces the mark 2 WagonR and the badly in need of replacement Suzuki Liana, whilst Chang-an Suzuki gets all the good stuff (SX4, new Alto, and Swift).

The new WagonR is expected to launch in 2010 with the 2008 Japanese model, which has been a top seller in the Japanese market over the past few months. Although the Japanese model gets a 660cc engine, the Chinese model is likely to get a 1.4L engine and the choice of a 5 speed or 4 speed automatic gearbox.

In news that has rocked the Chinese automotive industry, Changhe Automobile has declared that they will stop producing cars, and will pull out of the Suzuki-Changhe joint venture agreement.

Changhe currently makes the following vehicles for Suzuki: Suzuki Landy, Suzuki Alto, Suzuki WagonR, as well as its own developed vehicles such as the Changhe IDEAL (1 and 2). According to Reuters reports, Changhe are moving into the aerospace business:

SHANGHAI, July 18 (Reuters) – Loss-making automaker Jiangxi Changhe Automobile Co (600372.SS: Quote, Profile, Research), said on Friday it will acquire two aerospace units worth up to 920 million yuan ($134 million) from China Aviation Industry Corp and transform itself into an aerospace company.

Changhe Auto, controlled by AviChina Industry & Technology Co (2357.HK: Quote, Profile, Research), will transfer all of its assets and liabilities and issue up to 90 million new shares to China Aviation in exchange for the two subsidiaries, it said in a statement.

The two subsidiaries’ combined estimated value is 800 million to 920 million yuan, it said.

China Aviation Industry Corp is a state-controlled holding company set up to take control of the country’s two state-run aircraft makers, AVIC I and AVIC II, which officially announced a merger plan last month.

Changhe Auto’s A shares traded in Shanghai jumped by their daily limit of 5 percent to 5.65 yuan in morning trade, outperforming a 0.31 percent rise in the benchmark index .SSEC. The shares had been suspended from trade since June 8. AviChina’s Hong Kong-listed shares fell 1.9 percent to HK$1.55. ($1=6.877 Yuan) (Reporting by Fang Yan; Editing by Edmund Klamann)

It is currently unclear who will take over Changhe’s automobile producing division. Suzuki are reportedly planning to create their own independent sales network to continue selling their products in China, which has been a lossmaker to date.

The Suzuki Liana was never a truly succesful car in China, its got everything that most small Chinese families need, its got a nice big trunk for the kids junk and the shopping, its big enough to carry 5 people without any problems, partly due to the 1.6 engines, but why wont it sell well in China? Perhaps its just ugly.

SUZUKI Motor Corp, Japan’s second-biggest minicar maker, will recall Liana compact vehicles in China to fix faults in their transmissions.

The recall, starting tomorrow, covers 11,716 Liana cars made in China between October 27, 2005, and June 9 this year, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement posted on its Website, citing the auto maker’s local venture. It’s the first recall by Changhe Suzuki Automobile Co.

<img align="left" alt="wagonr Is <strike>Changan</strike> Changhe Suzuki ready to upgrade the WagonR?" id="image1110" title="wagonr.jpg" src="http://www.chinacartimes.com/wp-content/wagonr.jpg" />The Wagon R has been out for donkeys years, and its getting a bit long in the tooth – even in China where the first generation WagonR sells a lot but is starting to lose ground to more funkier looking designs (We’re thinking of the new Chevrolet range here)

Rumors are starting to circulate that <strike>Chang’an</strike> Changhe Suzuki are getting ready to make the newer, more up to date version of the Suzuki WagonR to increase sales in China. We hope its true, the new generation WagonR looks quite good (pictured, left) There is even talk of a 4WD edition. China Car Times will keep watching this one with a keen interest.

update: Thanks to Erik for point out that the WagonR is made by Changhe Suzuki and not Chang’an Suzuki. We got our Changs mixed up.

The Suzuki Landy – the mini MPV which packs a punch – is set to go on teh Chinese market any day soon. Priced at a comfortably affordable 70,000rmb it looks set to be popular with people who need to drag around a few more people on their daily rounds. There will be seven different models of the Landy available with varying options packages, including a 1.4 four wheel drive option, which is sure to be a hit wit those that really do carry around seven adults on a daily basis. China Car Times had a chance to get up close with the Landy at the Qingdao auto show – and were surprised by the quality of the car for such a low price.

We are told the Landy is very popular in Japan, but will it be as popular in China, especially when other companies are making similar (but not as nice) mini vans at a much lower cost?

The question for China Car Times readers is, are you a Landy Lady?
