Chery wants to change that, they partnered with Israeli Corp’s Quantum LLC in 2007 to make a range of high end cars for the Chinese market and export markets.Israeli Corp are flush with cash and want to make cars, Chery on the other hand are making good cars but have a poor brand image, together they could change that. The partnership was given the go ahead by the Chinese government in December 2007 but the company went to ground and no news was heard from them until recently.

Qoros Timeline:

The new brand, Qoros, was officially born yesterday. At the joint press conference between Quantum LLC and Chery in Shanghai, the new home of Qoros, officials from both companies were eager to put forward their plans for the company, showing their new logo and also first concept car. Both companies have invested around 3.4 billion RMB in capital into the company which should see its first car hit the roads in 2013. Qoros won’t be another Chinese company aiming to export its models, instead Qoros is staffed by largely international talent at the top of the company with former Volvo, GM, VW and Jaguar Land Rover staff on board. The Vice Chairman, Mr. Volker Steinwascher claims that Qoros is aiming to produce annual sales of 150,000 vehicles by 2015 or 2016 with roughly half of those sales being to the international market. The first three cars will be compact models designed from scratch in partnership with Chery, the engines are already being designed by the Austrian tech firm AVL and will be produced by Chery, although Chery already produces its own ATECO engines. According to Chinese press reports the new brand will be a premium brand designed by industry leaders and be on par with current premium brands in terms of quality and engineering but sell at around 10% less than current manufacturers. The first car is expected to be a compact sedan, a compact hatchback and also a small SUV will follow, Qoros are also expected to produce EV versions of their models as well.

Ultimately a compromise has apparently been made, reports in the Beijing Daily News indicate that the joint venture may be allowed to go ahead as Subaru has agreed to put Chery logos on Subaru cars which would make the deal more of a licensing deal than a regular 50:50 joint venture, although Chinese press are still referring to the project as a joint venture. Chery will also be able to control the Sales Network for the new China made vehicles and will likely run retail operations through its own Chery branded dealerships. Under the new proposals, the deal is expected to be able to go forward with out any major issues.

The QQ maybe a common car in China, but its outing at the 2011 Guangzhou Auto Show was a rare event indeed, you see Chery never shows the QQ at major events. We’re not sure why Chery don’t like to show the QQ, perhaps due the QQ’s murky past as one of the first Chinese cloned cars where the QQ had a striking resemblance to the then Daewoo Matiz/Chevrolet Spark. However, for 2012 the QQ has had a slight makeover ahead of a new generation coming in 2013/14, which will leave the below car to soldier on for a few more years. The exterior has received a black ‘Triumph style‘ safety bumper around the front end but the rear end seems largely the same. The interior has had a workover and seems a lot less rough than before.

Engines for the new QQ will be the same as the old QQ, so a basic 800cc rising to a range topping 1.3L with a 1.0L in the middle.

Even though the QQ is now nearly a decade old, we think it will still continue to be Chery’s bread and butter car.

The QQ is long in the tooth to say the least, the car was first launched in 2003 and hasn’t had much of an update until mid 2011, the market is now full of low cost Chinese cars but the QQ was the first but not exactly the best anymore. Now Chery are updating the QQ for 2012 with an entirely new model:

The next generation QQ3 seems to have some styling that is borrowed from its rivals, the Geely Panda and BYD F0 (and by default, Toyota Aygo) seem to be represented in the rear hatch of the new QQ, Chery were a market leader with the original QQ so here’s hoping that they do something unique with the next generation model. The interior seems to be interesting to say the least, whilst the platform is reportedly shared with the Riich M1 and also the Chery A1, this is a major upgrade for the new QQ as the A1 is considered one of the better platforms on the market. We might see the new QQ in November at the Guangzhou Auto Show in concept form, but Chery rarely shows concepts and instead prefers to show production models, in which case we might not see the QQ until April 2012 at the Beijing Auto Show.

The reason for some Riich dealerships to close in Beijing is in that only M1 and X1 sell in any reasonable volume, and it is believed that the G5 model is priced too high, and most consumers don’t want to buy a Chinese-brand car at some 170,000 yuan – JAC’s Binyue, BYD’s M6, L3, and Roewe 750 have the same problem. What makes it worse is the consumption restrictive policy this year drags down the sales of M1 and X1 sharply.

The only successful homegrown high-end brand is Geely’s Emgrand. It is learned that every of the three Emgrand dealerships in Beijing sold more than 100 vehicles monthly last year. Although its sales this year fall sharply due to Beijing’s license plate issuing policy, its market performance in the second and third-tier cities is satisfactory.

Maybe the brand influence and after-sales service quality of China’s homegrown brands are not good enough to support a high-end brand, and it takes time for Chinese consumers to accept a homegrown high-end brand.

Today is the birthday of The People’s Liberation Army, the military force was founded on August 1st 1927 and its on the PLA’s birthday that Chery decided to launched the new Riich G6. The Riich G6 will be aimed squarely at business users and government fleet procurements, hence the August 1st launch. The G6 comes with a 2.0T engine that produces 158bhp power, the engine was of course designed by Chery’s ATECO engine company, measuring in at LxWxH 4968 x 1845 x 1526 and having a wheelbase of 2820mm the car is so small economy model.

The Riich brand was introduced to bring Chery into the higher markets, but with the G6 selling from 189,000rmb to 259,800rmb depending on specification and with only three models available to choose from, it maybe that Riich are forced to lower the cost.

Overall the G2 looks like it might be a seriously interesting car when it hits the market in the fourth quarter of 2011, although the Riich brand has not taken off with the same gusto as Geely’s Emgrand brand, it appears that Chery might be able to play catch up with this convincing little motor. The 3.0L V6 will be good for 199bhp and 278Nm of torque which seems to make it a slightly lazy engine when compared to other international manufacturers offerings.

Although the G6 has not officially hit the market it has appeared in many government procurement catalogs, the G6 will be coming in other flavors of displacement with 1.8T, 2.0T, 2.0TGDI and of course the above 3.0L V6 on offer, all of which can be paired with a 5 speed automatic or a 5 speed manual.

Quoros logo

News of the joint venture slipped from the headlines as soon as they appeared, for almost three years there was only the smallest amount of news from the company. Now it appears that the project is firing on all pistons with the joint venture receiving approval from the government to go ahead and move into a new factory based in Changshu City, West of Shanghai and only a few hours north by car from Chery’s hometown of Wuhu. Changshu’s location also makes it an ideal export base for the company.

Chery and Quantum LLC quietly approved and received a license to produce cars in China from the central government; some details were leaked to the press which indicated they were planning to build sports sedans. The new factory will be able to produce 150,000 cars in its first phase but will be able to scale to a higher amount at a later stage; one factor that has been highlighted is that 40% of the produce must be exported.
The cars that will be produced by the two have been codenamed CF1X, CF11, CF14, and CF16, out of those CF11, CF14 are to be sedans whilst CF16 is expected to be a sports utility model.

According to sources CF11 and CF14 are to be hatchback and sedan models based on the same platform, the final model will be the same size as the Chery E5. The CF16 SUV will launch after the CF11 and CF16 hit the market.
So what brand will Chery be using these new models? It appears that Chery are planning to set up yet another sub brand that will be higher than the current premium brand Riich, the new brand will be called Qoros, the Chinese name will be Guan Zhi or Ka Rui Si, the name has been settled on early to prevent a name squatters from taking it before Chery’s had the chance to claim it. As for the brand, it appears Chery will be using a Q logo.

The ultimate goal of the Qoros brand is unclear, are they attempting to make a world beating Chinese car? If a new Chinese car is going to hit the world market then it needs to have something special to it, the world is full of low cost traditional 4cylinder and 6 cylinder vehicles, what the markets need is something that is unique, on the other hand if they are going to launch a pure electric car first then they will face the barrier of an untrusting public and will only sell to hardcore nerds.

The Chery-Quantum deal is an unusual one as it appears to have all the characteristics of a sub brand as we have seen from GM, Honda and Nissan but without Quantum LLC actually being a car maker itself, but Quantum’s parent company Israel Corp is involved in a number of different business areas, one of which being transportation, notably they do own 30% of Better Place a small start up that has grown quite large and is heavily pushing its battery swap idea.

The QQ series - Crossover in the middle and facelift on the right

The Chery QQ has fought a long hard battle since its first introduction into the Chinese market way back in 2003, it was difficult for Chinese consumers to warm to small cars in the early days as they were deemed unsafe (and they weren’t wrong) but the QQ won everybody over with its cute looks and cheap price, but from 2008 onwards an entire legion of cheap low cost Chinese mini cars has hit the market but Chery have not update the QQ. A next generation QQ is set to hit the roads in either 2012 or 2013, and in the meantime the below facelift QQ is going to have to take the fight to the market pending the introduction of the next generation model.

Engines for the QQ will largely be the same – 800cc, 1.0L and 1.1L, the middle 1.0L is a next generation engine with slightly improved power output and fuel consumption, the other two remain the same as the previous QQ models. The Riich M1 was slated to be the next generation Chery QQ but it was pulled over to the Riich project leaving the Chery brand without a convincing small car for the next two years, hopefully the facelift QQ will resonate with consumers that want to have a sound and well known car.

Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. is planning to set up a car assembly plant in Myanmar, the company said Friday.

The plant will be capable of rolling out 3,000 to 5,000 Chery’s QQ3 compact cars annually, said Jin Yibo, a spokesman with Chery Auto.

The company has so far received nearly 10,000 orders for its QQ3 car in the southeast Asian country this year, according to the spokesman.

The automaker based in east China’s Anhui province began exporting its cars 10 years ago and has speeded up construction of overseas production bases and sales networks in recent years.

The company has established 16 plants, including four under construction, in 15 countries and regions by the end of 2010.

In 2010, Chery Auto exported about 100,000 cars. By mid-April this year, the company had exported a total of 500,000 cars, figures from the company show.

The new QQ3 was expected to launch at the Shanghai Auto Show but it was noticeably absent, however Chery have never displayed the QQ at any international auto shows, possibly due to the infamy that it brought to the company.

The recent introduction of the updated Chery Cowin series of cars has upset QQ sales, with QQ sales accounting for a lesser proportion of Chery branded car sales each month plus Chery’s competitors are bringing out vastly improved mini cars each month. The Riich M1 was actually intended to be the new QQ3, but when the Riich brand was born the M1 was taken over to the Riich brand and the QQ3 was left to soldier on – the new generation should be in the market in the next two years but a facelift version is due towards the end of 2011, which might be enough to save the QQ from extinction.

The E5 sits on the same platform as the Chery A5 and Fulwin3, the E5 measures in at LxWxH 4580x1760x1483mm and has a wheelbase of 2600mm. Power will come from 1.5L and 1.8L engines from Chery’s own ATECO range. The new Eastar is a million miles away from its previous version, the sleek lines put on par with the Kia’s and Hyundai’s of yesteryear and could even (perhaps) be compared to a toned down Kia K5 (Optima) sedan in the right light. The Eastar rides on top of the Riich G5 platform and is carrying a naturally aspirated engine rather than the thirsty 2.0T engine that is in place in the Riich G5.

Chery have launched a new design theme for their Chery range of vehicles that will make them somewhat different from their other Riich branded sedans, the new design themes seems to make Chery’s new models look very similar to the current Subaru range.

When launched the E5 is expected to be priced from 70,000rmb and rising for the base 1.5L whilst a 1.8L engine offering is available as well.

It will help Chery cope with the increasing financial stress from R&D demands, necessity of making breakthrough in high-end market and business expansion.

Seeing Chery’s robust growth in recent years, you may not believe its operating profits in 2007, 2008 and 2009 were only 1.13 billion yuan, even minus 194 million yuan, and minus 556 million yuan respectively. Even if the government subsidies were counted in, its net profit margins in the three years were only 5.25%, 2.38%, and 0.27% respectively.

The reason for its unprofitable situation is in the low prices of its products. In order to change the situation, Chery decided to make breakthrough in the mid and high-end markets.

However, the young automaker does not have a firm and specific plan to reach the goal. It just kept changing its brand and product systems, which was also attributed to the frequent reshuffle of its technology and management executives.

It first founded an independent sales company for its newly-added mid and high-end Riich (car and SUV) and Rely (MPV) brands in March 2009, and even set up a Rely division in August 2010. But the two brands were brought back to Chery sales company afterwards, and the Rely division was canceled, as the brand was not mature enough for independent operation.

Besides, Amulet was added as a sub brand of Chery in May 2010, but it became a separate low-cost passenger vehicle division as the company set up its five divisions in August 2010. Chery even changed the names of its products in the brand system restructuring. The former QQ6 and A5 have been renamed as Amulet 1 and Amulet 3 respectively.

After all these efforts, Chery was still the company’s volume-leading brand last year, contributing 77% of the automaker’s total sales. Obviously, the other three new brands have not grown mature.

Realizing the problem, Chery determined to carry out strategic transformation this year even though its sales rank may fall out of the top 10 list. The focus of the adjustment this time will be integrating its brand influence and increasing its brand premium, so as to make more profits. In order to realize the plan, Chery sets its sales target for 2011 at 800,000 units only, up 17.3% from a year earlier.

The Oriental Son was Chery’s first big sedan, it was a well received model at the time due to other Chinese manufacturers being unable to make such a mid size sedans at the time, and joint venture companies being unable to make a large sedan at a low cost. The Oriental Son is coming back, based on the Riich G6 platform and packing a 2.0L VVT engine.

The rebirth of the Oriental Son is an interesting point for Chery, its coming back into a market that it was pushed out of due to being an old product in a new market era. Brilliance’s offerings quickly smothered the original Oriental Son and then other mid size sedans from other Chinese companies such as Hawtai, Geely, and BYD have taken care of the market. If you’re coming to the party late, you’re going to have bring a good party piece with you.

The next model for the Chery line up is the below Chery E5.

The CheryA1 is almost like Chery’s poor little orphan, it sits at the bottom of the range but is clearly a superior vehicle to the QQ range and also the Chery Riich M1/X1 but seems to garner a few sales. Here’s hoping that the below face lift will put some juice in its get up and go for this year and next year.

According to the reports of Nikkei News, Japan’s Fuji Heavy Industry will join hands with Chinese automaker Chery to open a plant in Dalian to make Subaru vehicles, and the joint investment is expected to be around 240 million yuan. An authoritative source with Subaru China confirms that the negotiation between Subaru and Chery goes smoothly, and the final partnership is quite certain.

China has been seen as the most important market for Subaru. According to the company’s plan, Subaru will announce its mid-term business plan for this year in March.
