The Venucia brand in 2010 when the sub brand craze was just starting to kick off as a way for manufacturers to recycle their old products to potential economy buyers who wanted a foreign brand but only had the budget for a Chinese brand, by buying a sub brand product consumers would be able to get those foreign designed looks and ‘mature technology’ for a Chinese price, on the other hand they could chose a locally designed and engineer car with unknown technology. From a consumers point of view, the sub brand might be the way forward, if they like old technology. Auto commentators did not take well to the introduction of the Venucia model as Nissan and Honda both introduced badge engineered cars rather than introducing an entirely new car based on older technology as with GM’s Baojun brand.

When Honda announced its plans for a new sub brand between itself and Guangzhou Auto everyone in the auto industry was expecting the new brand to make the most of the situation, i.e. mixing the old Honda City’s platform with a new skin and brand, instead the Li Nian was born which looked exactly like the old Honda City….. with a new badge. Now, when GM did it for the Baojun brand, they used an old Buick Excelle platform, reskinned the car, threw in an old 1.5L engine from the Aveo (which is great, as spare parts are dirt cheap and widely available) and they had a car capable of mass sales, Li Nian on the other hand barely rolls off the forecourts.

At last years Guangzhou Auto Show the Venucia concept showed a sleek sleek sedan that was more international sports car than Tiida based family car – all being said, at that show they only showed the nose of the car peaking out of the wall. At this years Shanghai Auto Show the full car was on show, again more sleek sexy sports, not dull Tiida. At this years GZ Auto Show, Dongfeng-Nissan will show off Venucia’s first model, which is looking more like a a sexed up last generation Tiida for 2012 with a new set of badges. It seems Nissan’s auto show posters outside of the exhibition center have given the game away ahead of the launch, but at least the anticipation is over and the disappointment is not too bad.

The brand will be using the older Nissan Tiida platform for its first car and is likely to reskinned, although the below pictures seem to indicate that the first Venucia will look rather like the Tiida sedan.

The Venucia brand follows in the same foot steps as GM’s Baojun brand which was set up between a third way joint venture between SAIC, GM and Wuling. The Baojun brand has had a good start with several thousand units being sold in the first months of it being in production. Honda has also set up multiple sub brands with its partners at Guangzhou Honda where the Li Nian brand was hatched and over at Dongfeng-Honda where the Ciimo brand is about to delivered.

Nissan have already become market leaders in the Chinese markets with 750,000 units sold in 2010, by recycling their older platforms for use within the Venucia brand which will be targeted at economy buyers in rural areas Nissan will be able to net even more sales.

The Murano launched in China yesterday with a price tag to match its high expectations, the sporty looking SUV will come in at a mighty 488,800rmb which roughly works out to $76,000USD at today’s exchange rate. The Murano will be available with a 3.5L V6 only, although when the car is put into production in China early next year that 3.5V6 is likely to have the option of a 2.5V6 as well. Considering the Murano starts at roughly $30,000USD, it seems that Nissan are hoping to make a fair penny on these in China, presuming they move off the dealership forecourts.

The Murano has been rumored to be arriving in the Chinese market for several months but now it appears that the large SUV really is preparing for the Chinese market with an introduction of a Chinese name. The Murano was unofficially known as the Mei Lun Nu in Chinese mainland automotive media following the Murano’s name from Hong Kong and Taiwan markets, but as the Murano’s localization at Dongfeng-Nissan’s factories comes closer Nissan have given the Murano its own Chinese name: Lou Lan (楼兰).

According to media reports the Murano will be first imported into China to take the fight to the Toyota Highlander but will later be produced by Dongfeng Nissan in China, prices are expected to be 300,000rmb and rising. Nissan have not yet confirmed a launch date for the imported Nissan Murano, but it is expected to be in the fourth quarter of the year.

The Japanese 3, as the Chinese like to call them are made up of Honda, Toyota and Nissan – Toyota introduced the Highlander in 2009 as an imported model but later swiftly moved it to local production, Honda and Nissan have been left pondering if to introduce their own Pilot and Murano mid size SUV’s into the Chinese market. Nissan seems to be moving faster to counter the Highlander with the introduction of the Murano SUV which is expected to be produced by their joint venture partnership with Dongfeng Auto, Nissan also seem ready to introduce the Murano Convertible SUV into the Chinese market as well, images leaked from the Chinese patent office clearly show the rag top version of the Murano:

The Nissan March has not been a popular car in China since its launch here in late 2010, the model has not been taken to with the same excitement as the Ford Fiesta, which has itself become the standard for small cars in China. To improve sales Nissan are possibly mulling over the ability of launching a two door version with a 1.6T engine producing 190bhp, the same engine that’s found in the EU and US model of the Nissan Juke.

The Nissan Compact Sport is based on the poor selling March (Micra) platform but with an overhauled interior that will make the car popular with younger buyers who want to buy a hot hatch from hell. This particular model was a joint project between Nissan’s Japanese and Beijing based design center, and goes some way to show that not all Chinese designed cars are poor quality or clones of something else, here’s hoping that this model makes it to the production line soon.

Venucia is the new brand born of proud new parents, Dongfeng and Nissan. The first Venucia concept model was shown off in Shanghai yesterday but will not go on sale until the first half of 2012 according to Nissan

Yang Song, the head of sales at Dongfang-Nissan, said that Nissan and Dongfeng are aiming to build a dealership network of 100 dealers covering 31 key provinces in China before the end of the year. Nissan dealerships are becoming crowded with the ever increasing product line up which has powered Dongfeng-Nissan to become one of the best selling car brands in China last year with over 1.02 million cars cars sold, surpassing the US market for Nissan.

The Venucia brand was first aired at the Guangzhou Auto Show in 2010 but for the Shanghai Auto Show Nissan showed the Venucia’s first model. No information was forthcoming on what might be powering this first new model, the concept cars name not announced either, furthermore looking under the concept no suspension or platform was visable – concept cars are not always based on real car platforms but models that are soon to hit the production lines generally are, perhaps Nissan are further behind than initially thought with this model.

Nissan has several joint venture partnerships in China, all of which have heavily contributed to the impressive 2010 sales tally.

Sales of Nissan vehicles are up by 35.5% in China to 1.02 million vehicles which has made China Nissan’s greatest market and has sold more vehicles in China than in the USA, the USA end of year figures are at 908,570 vehicles. According to Nissan, the strong sales figures are being led by demand for the Nissan Teana sedan which is one of the best selling sub 300,000rmb V6 vehicles available, sales of the Teana reached 140,842 units which was Nissan’s best selling vehicle in 2010.

Whilst other auto makers are aiming for larger growth in 2011, Nissan are play it low key with Nissan expecting growth of 10% in 2011 due to the increase in tax on small displacement cars – of which Nissan currently carries four models; Livina, Tiida, Sunny and the Micra models.

Dongfeng-Nissan sold 660,160 vehicles in 2010, whilst Nissan’s other joint venture with Zhengzhou Auto is responsible for commercial vehicles, sales at Zhengzhou-Nissan reached 100,100 units and showed an increase of 78.6% in sales over 2009 figures largely due to the introduction of the Nissan NV200 compact van.

Dongfeng-Nissan recently signed a deal to recycle ex-Nissan platforms into a new economy brand for the Chinese market (and likely beyond the PRC’s borders). Venucia is their creation and will be hitting the market in 2012 or later, the logo features five stars (as a possible nod to China with its five star flag) but according to the press release the five stars represent the five promises that Venucia will make to its clients; “to respect customers, create value, do the best, achieve world-class quality, and seek the dream” Whilst having possibly worse grammar than the average China Car Times news posting, the first Venucia model actually looks quite sharp in its early concept stage.

The new Sunny is based on the new Micra platform which is presumably lengthened to build the compact sedan which is now Nissan’s global compact car and should be released in quite a few different markets the world round.

In the Chinese market it is expected that the Sunny will become Nissan’s compact sedan whilst the Nissan Tiida will become the line up’s compact hatchback and thus won’t be available in notchback sedan form as before.

The new Sunny is being compared to a mini Nissan Teana in terms of styling, although to CCT’s eyes it looks a little uncomfortable in terms of its styling although it will look different once it hits the roads and is mixed up with other cars on the roads, the styling could be compared to the Toyota Vios.

The new Nissan Sunny is expected to take the place of the current Nissan Tiida models in the Chinese market, although a newer version of the Tiida has been released in various markets the Chinese one maybe facing the final curtain as the forthcoming Sunny becomes the new compact sedan at Dongfeng China. Should the Sunny launch in sedan form only it would be missing the all important hatch models unless of course Dongfeng-Nissan have one up their sleeves, which they probably do in the form of the Tiida hatch, so maybe not curtains after all?

The 9th generation Nissan Sunny might have gone out of production in 2007 but Dongfeng-Nissan are planing to bring back the Sunny nameplate with the new 10th generation Nissan Sunny. The Sunny is expected to sit above the current Nissan Bluebird but below the Nissan Teana, the below pictures show the front end of the new Nissan Sunny, which until now was only shown as a rendering on various different websites. It was initially rumored that the last generation Sunny was going to come back into production as a Dongfeng self developed vehicle, but now it is clear that the 10th Generation will be available in China:

A fresh interior is being made available for the Sunny and seems to be a miniature version of the Teana in terms of styling, and is almost as if Nissan are planning to clone Buick’s idea of making their compact sedan a mini version of their flagship sedan in a bid to keep consumers within the Nissan family as they upgrade their cars. A 1.8L engine will be used in the Sunny, it is unclear if they will go for the 1.6 option that is available with the Bluebird Sylphy to gain a better sales tax bracket for end consumers, however it is clear that cars such as the Ford Focus have managed to hit a sweet spot with Chinese consumers even though they offer larger 1.8L engines.

You can expect that this model will be on show at the Guangzhou Auto Show later this year, and be on sale in early 2011.

The Nissan March (Micra in Europe and India) may have only just launched in China, but it seems that Nissan are planning to extend their March offerings in China and elsewhere with the addition of a sedan March.

Whilst hatchbacks are becoming more popular in China, sedans still rule the roost and this is evident in other car manufacturers line ups, cars such as the Fiesta sedan, the Mazda2 sedan, VW Polo sedan, Fiat Linea, and the forthcoming Toyota Etios sedan are popular with Chinese consumers. Its not entirely clear where small sedans are more popular with Chinese consumers, a long held theory is that consumers believe that they are getting a bigger, safer car with a compact sedan instead of a sedan. It appears that Nissan are aiming to attack this theory with a compact sedan, although an eventual launch date for China has yet to be announced.

Whilst other manufacturers are apparently worrying over sharing electric vehicle tech with their Chinese partners, it seems that Nissan are all too eager to share with their JV partner Dongfeng, which might just be a good thing for Chinese-Japanese relations after several weeks of low level bickering that just became very high-level.

Nissan’s CEO’s CEO, Carlos Ghoson, speaking at a Nissan factory opening event in Zhengzhou earlier this week, stunned audiences when he announced that Nissan will do everything in its power to bring more electric car products to China, and will transfer electric car know how to its Chinese partner Dongfeng Automobile. The secrets are likely to include the electric battery know technology that Nissan developed for the forthcoming Nissan Leaf, which is expected to go into production in China within the next several years as the demand for electric vehicles heats up.

Dongfeng’s own pure electric vehicles are in development and are not just limited to passenger vehicles, they have also worked on pure electric city buses and trucks within the last few month, a Dongfeng S30 hybrid car is expected to launch in 2011.

Dongfeng-Nissan has seen rapid development over the past few years due to Nissan’s clever introduction of launching models at the right time which appears to strongly resonate with consumers, the Leaf has already been shown in China this year at the Beijing Auto Show and is expected to launch in China next year.

Dongfeng-Nissan have been on a sales roll for the past few years and have gone from strength to strength on the back of strong sales thanks to low tax on sub 1.6L cars and a wide range of vehicles, Dongfeng-Nissan sold 500,000 cars in 2009 and are planning to sell 600,000 in 2010, in addition they are getting ready to produce their two millionth car together.

Now Dongfeng-Nissan are planning to capitalize on their success and start their own jointly developed brand for the Chinese market, originally Dongfeng-Nissan’s CEO, Mr. Song Yuan Shi expressed that they were not planning to build a new brand, but it seems that Mr. Song is going to have to go back on his word. The first car is expected to be based on the current Nissan Tiida platform and will be a hatchback vehicle with a sports styling.

The Nissan Micra has followed in the Japanese market footsteps and launched in China under the March name. The March is being built via Nissan’s China joint venture with Dongfeng that has exploded in popularity over the past four years due to an aggressive model launch that has propelled them to one of the larger foreign car makers in China. The introduction of the March fills in an product gap in their dealerships that was being exploited by other small car makers, with low price Nissan is likely to take car sales from domestic self developed car makers.

The March is powered by a 1.5L engine mated to a 5 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic gearbox and is the cheapest model in the Dongfeng-Nissan lineup. Nissan is expected to launch other models in China to further fill in gaps in the model line up, the Nissan Quest MPV is likely to be Dongfeng-Nissan’s next model and also a new Tiida range.

Dongfeng’s entry into the self developed automobile industry has lagged behind other state manufacturers, however with some serious platforms and technologies under their belts it is expected that they will make quick advances into the market, although they are largely lagging behind the likes of Chery and Geely.

Previously it was rumored that the last generation of Nissan Sunny was to become a Dongfeng self developed vehicle, instead Nissan are planning to bring the car back from the grave and breath new life into it.

According to Dongfeng Nissan from its launch until February 2010 the Tiida range has already sold 600,000 units in China and over 60% of its internals are locally sourced, which means that this platform will be a great head start for Dongfeng’s own car ambitions.

They sort of humble along and get sold alongside newer models so that auto makers can attract the bargain bin customer who wants a large car at an economy price, and then they have the customer that thinks about aesthetics and modernity. VW are the kings of this trade, they first put the Santana into production in 1991 in China, several years after it went in and out of production in Germany, they did the same with the mark2 Jetta, both of which are still available today alongside their modern counterparts, VW even offers different generations of Passat just to confuse people even some more. Hyundai have done it with the Elantra, Mazda are doing it with the Mazda6, they are doing it because it works fantastically. Now Nissan are planning to get in on the action by reproducing the 2005 Nissan Sunny in 2010. The idea seems to be that the Sunny will be positioned and priced higher than the Nissan Tiida but below the Nissan Bluebird Sylphy and will be aimed at those that require a big car attached to a big brand but don’t want to pay big pricing, hence the addition of a late 90′s car in 2010.

Initially it was believed that Nissan were planning to give the Sunny platform over to joint venture partner Dongfeng for their own self developed vehicle range, but now it seems the Sunny will be seeing the sun one more time.

The March is the first small car that Dongfeng Nissan have introduced and comes at a time when multi nationals are entering into the small car segment whilst the Chinese domestic manufacturers are heading towards the premium segment where joint venture cars have reigned supreme, in short a clash is about to happen and who comes off worse has yet to be decided.

The March will be going up against the Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta, Ford Fit,and the popular Sail. Pricing for the March has not yet been announced, but it is likely to be sub 80,000rmb as it is aiming to take on highly popular Sail and Swift.

Thankfully on Friday morning Carlos Ghosn himself was on hand to explain to the assembled media which were made up of local and foreign representatives alike. The Nissan Leaf is capable of traveling 160km on its own battery power, but can be charged up on home electrics, however this takes up to 8 hours, where as at a quick charging station it only needs 30 minutes to reach 80% fully charged, but after a 10 minute charge it can travel 50km no problem.

The Leaf will be imported into China, however it will be wise to remember that the Leaf will cost around $25,00USD in the USA when launched later this year. The Chinese market leaf will be priced at somewhere in the region of $30,00USD once import taxation has been added, however government subsides of upto 150,000 RMB will be available for new energy cars, which might make the Leaf attractive to some.

The 2010/11 Livina has some niceties that were never available on the original Livina such as leather seats, sunroof, and keyless ignition. On the exterior the grill appears to have been updated, as well as the lower bumper which is now body coloured rather than being black.

The engine remains the same with it being a 1.6L 105BHP engine producing 150Nm of torque, which is quite perky.Pricing is expected to remain the same, which is from 80,000rmb to 120,000rmb depending on specification.

On another note, CCT has one of these for the past three years and has yet to write a review of it as my wife is usually busy driving it into walls and other things she claims she couldn’t see at the time. The Livina is a brilliant, sturdy little motor that is thankfully cheap to repair as well.

Nissan has done extremely well in the past 12 months in the Chinese market, with monthly sales climbing month after month due to their comprehensive range of cars ranging from small mini cars such as the Livina and the forthcoming Micra, to large premium sedans such as the Teana and its SUV range which includes the Qashqai, the X-Trail, and the Paladin, basically Nissan has something for everyone. Nissan are planning to open a design studio in Beijing which will likely build some more cars with Chinese style for the Chinese market over the next few months reports Japan Today:

Nissan Motor Co said Monday it will establish a design studio in Beijing early next year to develop cars that better meet the needs of consumers in China and other rapidly growing Asian markets. The new studio, the first such facility to be set up by a Japanese carmaker in China, will be located in the Shao Yang district of Beijing, where automotive design activities are brisk, the company said.

The Japanese automaker plans to invest 11.76 million yuan, or about 156 million yen, on establishing the Chinese design studio and will hire about 20 designers to work there. Nissan currently has two design centers in Japan and one each in Britain and the United States.

The Dongfeng Nissan JV is getting quite a bit of a boost in the next coming months, its line up already consists of two SUVs (Qashqai and X-Trail) Compact hatches and sedans (Livina, Tiida, and Bluebird Sylphy) as well as larger sedans such as the Nissan Teana. That line up is soon to be extended by the launch of the Chinese built Nissan Quest MPV and also the addition of the super cute micro car, the Nissan Micra:

The above cars are from an initial test run of cars that Nissan produced with Dongfeng, and they look to be the latest generation of Micra, which Nissan have only just released sketches of.

The Micra is expected to be the cheapest car in the Nissan China line up and will be placed lower than the Nissan Livina, although it will carry the same 1.6L engine and 4 speed auto and 5 speed manual gearbox.

Dongfeng-Nissan are planning to recall over 50,000 Qashqai and X-Trail models that were produced in China. The recall was announced via China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine website yesterday, Dongfeng are recalling 14,168 X-Trails that were produced between March 31 2008 and to August 26 2009 and a further 33,667 Qashqai vehicles that were produced between February 18, 2008 and May 22, 2009.

The reasoning for the recall is due to a problem with the steering system which may result in the vehicle becoming difficult to steer in extreme cases.

CCT will be delivering his own Qashqai to Nissan sometime this weekend, Donfeng-Nissan clearly furthering the case for me to swap the Qashqai for a Toyota Highlander early next year.

Chinese automotive outlets are reporting that the Nissan Micra will be launched in the middle of 2010 and will be priced at a competitive 70,000rmb.

It’s expected that the Nissan Micra will be powered by a 1.4L engine and will also have the option of a 1.6l engine which will be taken from the Nissan Tiida (Versa) and Livina line up. The Micra will be another addition to the small car segment here in China, with it facing stiff competition from the likes of the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, and the recently launched Ford Fiesta.

The Nissan Slphy Bluebird is a small compact sedan from Dongfeng Nissan that sells reasonably well, and is probably the nicest Bluebird to date.

To take advantage of the growing ‘mini stretched’ market, Nissan have chosen to stretch the Sylphy Bluebird, which is expected to be the flagship Bluebird once launched later this year.

In addition to a stretched Bluebird, Nissan are expected to launch a 5 speed manual version of the Sylphy.

The Nissan Tiida, (or Versa for our American readers) has been a roaring success in China for Dongfeng-Nissan. The mixture of trendy design, small engine, and a relatively luxurious interior has made the Tiida hatch and sedan very popular with young Chinese and small families. Nissan are showing a Nissan Tiida sports model off at the Guangzhou Auto Show this week, although we are unsure if it will see Chinese production, or if it will be any sportier than a standard Tiida (other than the addition of a bodykit and stickering)

Engine options in the PRC for the Tiida are very limited, limited to just one option – a 1.6l, where as the USA gets the option of a 1.8l. We hope that China can get a 1.8l Tiida Sports, then perhaps Dongfeng Nissan can give China Car Times another Nissan to buy.

The launch of the X-Trail in China gives Dongfeng-Nissan an interesting array of vehicles, basically a car in every segment except for the supermini segment, which is expected to be corrected next year with the launch of the Nissan Micra, or Nissan March.

Dongfeng-Nissan’s X-Trail appears to be slightly different from both the first, and second generation X-Trails that were offered in overseas markets.

Dongfeng-Nissans current line up is currently as follows:

Compact MPV: Nissan Livina (5 seats), and Grand Livina (7 seats)

MPV: Yumsun (Made by Dongfeng subsidery, Zhengzhou)

SUV’s: Paladin – (X-Terra in the USA, also made by Zhengzhou), X-Trail, and Qashqai

Compacts: Nissan Tiida hatchback and sedan (Versa in the USA) and the Sylphy Bluebird sedan

Full size sedan: Nissan Teana

Dongfeng Nissan can only go from strength to strengh now it has an offering in every segement, 2009 onwards is going to be very interesting for Dongfeng and Nissan.

The lower end of the SUV market is about to get itself a new player, the Nissan Qashqai 1.6l! Potential buyers can already put down deposits for the 1.6l Qashqai at any Dongfeng-Nissan dealership. The 1.6l Qashqai produces 108bhp, and will come in 2wd, 5 speed manual with no sunroof. The Qashqai’s main competitors in the sub 150,000rmb SUV market are the domestically made Chinese brands such as Chery, who have had a corner stone on the cheap and cheerful SUV market for quite some time with their Tiggo SUV. Although price wise, the Tiggo and the Qashqai are quite different, but design wise the Qashqai is a much nicer SUV. Other competitors would be the highly popular Great Wall Hover, although this comes in at a much lower price of around 120,000rmb for a 2.4 Mitsubishi engine and 2WD. The Nissan Qashqai is selling very well in China, and is on course to fill its sales volume of 30,000 vehicles by the end of 2008.

Nissan and Dongfeng have now teamed upto introduce the 2nd generation X-trail into China as a domestically made vehicle.

The 2nd generation X-Trail is expected to go on the market in October 2008, with a choice of either 2.0l or 2.5l engine, both of which are already made in China for use in other Nissan models. Pricing of the Chinese made X-Trail is expected to be 240,000rmb, slightly cheaper than the import price of 290,000rmb to 330,000rmb.
