Chinese Auto Makers not ready to take on the world says a GM executive, probably correct but ol’ cynical China Car Times thinks he’s circling the wagons in an attempt to stop people buying cheap Chinese brands and pushing GM into the financial gutter.
But in other news:
GM’s Buick sales going through the roof, thanks to Chinese customers buying lots and lots and lots of Buicks in 2006. Funny how most of the low end Buick’s look a lot like old Vauxhall/Opel models - is China Car Times alone in this thinking method?
Chinese Cars are not quite as good as the Americans, Europeans or the Japanese autos, in this Zhong Xing SUV review.
China to nurture Global Competition, by pushing 50 state owned companies, including auto companies into becoming global leaders in their fields.
Chinese Cars Shine at Bologna - Gonow’s Board Chairman was quoted as saying “We want to further expand into the overseas markets, by first entering the Italian market, and then branching into the rest of Europe. After that, we’ll target North America.” Is he trying to rerun Operation Baytown?

It looks like GoNow is heading for the UK with their latest model, the DR. Are we supposed to read that as two letters or as Doctor? We are not sure but we dont recall seeing this model at the Beijing Auto Show, perhaps Gonow have been busy behind the curtains. Although Gonow is a Chinese manufacturer, the DR was designed and built in Italy. The Italian company buys the chassis and engines from the Chinese manufacturer Gonow and then then builds up the body and interior by themselves. It looks a lot like the Toyota Rav 4 though, as did the Chery Tigo and the other tiny Chinese car maker, UFO (we kid you not) SUV makers model. Production is due to start in mid 2008 and should be probably on the market towards the end of 2008 with a price tag of between 11,000GBP and 19,000GBP for the top spec model. The Rav 4 DR will come in either 3 door or 5 door options.

Although we havnt actually located any GoNow dealerships in Qingdao city to have a closer look at the GoNow range of trucks and jeeps, we have access to a large a amount of photographs that were supplied by GoNow themselves and…. hmmmm…. we’re mildly impressed. The front end of this truck does look a little Like the Ford truck.
Brother, is that you? The Ford 4-trac concept truck (below)
The GoNow pick up truck interior
I personally think GoNow deserve a round of applause for making a truck that actually looks like it was well thought out, even if does look a little like it was inspired by the Ford! Most Chinese made trucks that China Car Times sees on the roads these days look like basic Lego block trucks. This Go Now has something, something different and China Car Times likes it.
