Chinese car sales slowing

Chinese car sales arent slowing down, its just that they arent meeting the breakneck predictions that everyone earlier claimed:

BEIJING, July 8 — China’s passenger car sales rose 14.2 percent in the first half of this year, lower than an earlier expectation of 20 percent, as more stringent macroeconomic control policies and record high oil prices curbed purchases.

Domestic car makers sold a combined 3.3 million passenger vehicles including sedans, multi-purpose vehicles, sport utility vehicles and mini buses from January to June, the China Passenger Car Association said yesterday. Production rose 16.9 percent to 3.6 million vehicles during the same period.

Though sales in June grew 13 percent year on year to 517,469 units, it was the third consecutive month the rise in sales has reversed, triggering market speculation of a slowdown in the overall market for this year.

Rao Da, secretary general of CPCA, the semi-official automotive body, blamed the reversal on floods in south China that halted production of some car makers and the suspension in vehicle shipments.

    Buying put off

China raised the prices of gasoline and diesel by 17 percent at the end of June. Expecting further price rises, many auto buyers postponed their purchase plans, he added.

”The impact of higher fuel prices on car sales in China will be temporary,” said Rao, “But it will boost the sales of vehicles powered by small engines.”

Other analysts also believed that the bearish stock market, which plunged 50 percent since the beginning of this year, was also part of the reason behind the weak market demand.

Half-year sales of sedans rose 13 percent to 2.39 million units in China while SUVs posted a 41.7- percent sales jump to 211,885 units. Sales of MPVs added 2.4 percent to 106,297 units.

Of the top 10 best selling car makers in June, Shanghai VW ranked first with retail sales of 40,124 units in China. Next came FAW-VW and Shanghai GM, which sold 38,908 units and 35,189 vehicles respectively.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers is due to release official figures later this year.

June 2008 Auto Sales Results in China - Koreans back on top

The Koreans have made a come back into the Chinese market with a surprise attack from the China only Hyundai Elantra. The new Elantra has gained top spot by a large lead over its rival the Corolla in June.

  10. Chevrolet Lova/Aveo 9,520 (May 11,337)

All in all, a good month for smaller cars, with bigger cars such as the new Accord and Honda Camry falling down the ranks, probably as a result of the massive hike in fuel prices although the high rise in fuel costs probably wont hit the sales results until the end of July.

Top selling SUV’s from Jan to May 08

Chinese consumers were well aware of the impending gasoline price rises, but continued to buy SUV’s in their thousands.

What Global Recession? - Chinese auto sales hit 5 million in first half of 08

Global fears of a world wide recession, and rising oil prices have not put a dent in Chinese automobile sales over the past 6 months, with sales of just less than 1 million cars each month. Also, the figure quoted does not include imported cars, but rather is for domestically made vehicles only.

China Daily gives us the low down:

China was expected to sell a record 5 million domestically-made automobiles in the first six months, the latest figure released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers showed.

The figure was generally in line with the association’s forecast, based on the fact that about 4.5 million homemade autos were produced and sold in the first five months of 2008.

The production and sales volume rose 17.05 percent and 18.91 percent year on year respectively.

Of the total, the country produced 3.04 million and sold 3.02 million passenger vehicles during the period, up 16.33 percent and 17.41 percent from last year.

The production and sales of commercial vehicles hit 1.31 million and 1.32 million, a rise of 18.75 percent and 22.48 percent.

The top-10 domestic producers, including Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), First Automobile Works (FAW) and Dongfeng Motors had 84.19 percent of the total sales.

Chery and Geely, two car makers widely regarded as flag-bearers of Chinese homegrown brands, ranked seventh and tenth respectively.

Amazing.

Chinese car sales up over 17% this year, again.

BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhua) — Passenger car sales in China in the first five months of 2008 rose 17.41 percent over the same period a year earlier, an industry group said on Friday.     According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), car sales reached 3.02 million units, including 2.23 million sedans, 179,200 sport-utility vehicles (SUV) and 93,200 multi-utility vehicles (MUV) in the period.

Sales of passenger cars, SUV, and MUV in May alone totaled 564,600, up 16 percent over the same month last year. The growth rate was quicker than April’s 11 percent.

Auto sales in China were expected to exceed 10 million units this year, which would represent a full year sales growth of 14 percent, CAAM said.

Auto sales have maintained double-digit growth since the beginning of the year, in contrast to weakening sales in much of the world’s other major auto markets.

February 2008 Top Selling Models!

February is what could be called a slow month for car sales, with everyone wanting to spend a few dollars on their family over the Chinese New Year festival, cars are usually shoved aside. Another factor that affected car sales in 2008 was the adverse weather that affected most of Southern China.

  1. VW Santana - 20,700
  2. Buick Excelle -15,900
  3. Toyota Camry - 12,200
  4. Toyota Corolla - 12,000
  5. Chery QQ - 11,600
  6. Hyundai Elantra - 11,100
  7. Tianjin Xia Li - 10,200
  8. BYD F3 - 9,400
  9. VW Passat - 9,200
  10. Chevrolet Lova - 9,100

The Santana still comes out on top, but the Jetta has disappeared from the Top 10 in January. Strong Santana sales could be attributed to the fact that many taxi companies are currently upgrading their range of Santanas to the newer Santana GP/Vista model.
